Amnesty slams “homophobic” politicians

VILNIUS — Human rights campaigners Amnesty International slammed Lithuanian politicians for trying to overturn a permit gay parade in the country’s capital of Vilnius.

A group of parliamentarians have begun handing around a petition which will then be presented to the Vilnius Municipality ban asking them to help get the Baltic Pride gay parade canceled. Politicians have also approached the prosecutor general on account of the parade hurting [private_supervisor]minors, as Lithuania’s controversial Law on the Protection of Minors was recently came into force and tacitly bans public displays of homosexuality.

Petras Gražulis, the Seimas member who original suggested this bill to Seimas for the protection of minors, distributed the petition and told local media that it was signed by 50 lawmakers.

Amnesty International said parliamentarians that signed the petition has a “homophobic motivation” and charged the government with ensuring the safety of participants in the parade.

In past years, gay parades have been banned on the pretext of safety issues. Vilnius’ former Mayor Juozas Imbrasas, who now sits in Brussels as a European parliamentarian, was particularly critical of the gay movement and often tried to relegate their events to the edges of the city.
