MOSCOW — Dinamo Riga’s 09/10 campaign has come to an end at the Western Conference semifinal stage, with it going Latvia’s favorite past-time until this fall.

Their fate was delivered, again in a second overtime in their fifth game against HK MVD Thursday night as they went down 3-2. It was a rough, edgy game as the Latvians gave it their all before capitulating. The odds were against them, as no team in KHL history has recovered from a 1-3 playoff series before.

Things were looking good at first, with Dinamo Riga’s Marcel Hossa sliding one past the HK MVD goalposts in the 7th minute with an assist from [private_supervisor]Krišjānis Rēdlihs.

MVD answered back five minutes later, though, evening things up. That’s when it started to get ugly, with MVD’s Roman Derlyuk put in the penalty box for tripping. Each team ended up 18 penalty minutes.

After MVD scored its second goal in the 26th minute, Dinamo Riga’s Lauris Dārziņš and Vladimir Gorbunov started fighting after Dārziņš cross-checked the Russian. Both ended up spending four minutes in the penalty box.

MVD remained in control of the puck for most of the second period, and the third period was a more even affair until the 54:25 when Dārziņš scored the equalizer.

That set for a fruitless first period of overtime, in which both sides got two penalties but despite their best efforts, no goals. However, in the 3rd minute of the second overtime was the last nail in the coffin for Dinamo Riga when Alexei Ugarov scored.

It marks the end of an inspiring season for Dinamo Riga — after spending the first half near the bottom of the standings, they finally showed their true potential mid-season and eventually made the playoffs and defeated SKA in the first round. Their final record stands at 54-23.
