Anti-corruption czar asked to step down

VILNIUS — The fight against corruption could soon move into a new era after the head of the Financial Crime Investigation Service (FNTT) was asked to resign from his post on Wednesday.

Minister of Interior Raimundas Palaitis confirmed on Wednesday that FNTT head Romualdas Boreika had been asked to resign and would respond within a few days.

“All of the dealings of Boreikai and his personality prevents FNTT activities and today I suggested to the head that he resign. In my [private_supervisor]opinion, distrust of the top people retards FNTT activity,” Palaitis said on the TV show ‘The Right to Know.”

Graft by government officials is something Lithuania has struggled since gaining independence. The FNTT is responsible for tracking the illegal use of state funds and protect government revenue. Boreika had held the job since 2003, and while the service made countless arrests for corruption under his tenure, a list of unsolved cases of lost government funds piled up as well.

Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius said he supported the actions of his minister.

“I welcome the minister’s proposal. Has repeatedly said that and I’m sure this service is not one we can look at as an example of a well-oiled machine. Problems were already discussed in the past three to four months, both in terms of possible structural transformations, both for the institution and its leadership,” the prime minister said on Žinių Radijas Friday.
