VILNIUS — In a bit of déjà vu, the head of the Lithuania’s scandal-plagued national postal service Lietuvos Paštas was arrested Wednesday on charges of swindling and extortion.
Lietuvos Paštas General Director Andrius Urbonas, who started at the job only in October, was removed by the Minister of Transport and Communications Eligijus Masiulis from the post Wednesday after the arrest. Urbonas took over the post after his predecessor Ernestas Vaidelis resigned in [private_supervisor]the wake of a corruption scandal.
The charges against the head of the postal service relate to his conduct during a previous job when he worked for Hansabank Lizingas, a branch of Swedbank.
The police said in a statement that Urbanas had been charged with extortion of property and swindling, and are not commenting further.
It is alleged that he abused his former high position in the bank to give loans to clients who had been rejected for personal gain.
The prime minister declared to journalists that his work in the public sector had not been the cause of his arrest.
“I have information that this is associated with his activity during the years 2006-2007, even before he became director of Lietuvos Paštas,“ Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius told journalists.
