MUSTVEE, Estonia — A gas truck that drove into the ditch hit the road back to its native Poland around 7:40 a.m. Friday morning with police escort, avoiding larger settlements on the way.
The truck went off the road on Wednesday morning around 6 a.m. near the small town of Mustvee in eastern Estonia. It was finally pulled out from the ditch by 2:30 a.m. and according to the police experts the volatile gas trailer is now fit for the trip. The company that owns the truck arrived earlier that night, took the gas trailer and headed to Poland, where the gas will be re-inflated.
The gas truck was [private_supervisor]pulled back on the wheels with two cranes brought from Tartu and Estonian military equipment brought from Tallinn and Paldiski.
Once the truck got back on the wheels then the gas tank’s automatic protection mechanisms were back in normal position and the protection valves open automatically to let out the gas, keeping the pressure at a normal level.
Due to the danger that the gas tank posed, people living in homes nearby the wreck were evacuated. On Friday morning they were allowed to go back to their homes.
Police are still investigating the cause of the accident, saying only that alcohol was not a factor. The driver’s name as well as that of the Polish company that own the truck are not being released.
