VILNIUS — Police in Lithuania’s capital busted an illegal cigarette factory Tuesday that employed six workers, three of them Ukrainian.

Posing as a legitimate factory, the workers drank rum and worked to create thousands of boxes of cigarettes under the brands of West, Viceroy and Jin Ling. The cigarettes were likely headed for the Russian market, given that they had fake Russian tax stamps on them.

When customs officers burst into the [private_supervisor]illegal factory, the workers were still working at their machines, surrounded by the equipment and materials needed to make millions of litai worth of product.

Officers reported finding massive piles of tobacco on the floor in a mound ready for manufacture. Inside the factory, a total of 8.5 tons of tobacco was found with a total street value of about 2.5 million litai (€725,000).

The hallways of the factory were stacked with piles of cigarette boxes and other rooms stored cigarette filters, paper, glue, foil rolls and polypropylene.

Ready made cigarettes were waiting to be shipped too. Around 22,000 packs of West were found as well as some Jin Ling. These would have a street value of around 220,000 litai (€63,000).

The factory had been built to purpose with foam walls, a ventilation system and a cargo lift. The workers have been detained by police.
