MONACO — Latvian Ernests “The Gull” Gulbis was easily defeated in his second round match up at the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters.
Coming up against no. 13 seed Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland, Gulbis was going to have produce some of his best tennis if he hoped to remain alive. But his lack of court time over the past month was all too obvious with Wawrinka making easy work of dispatching of the Latvian 6-1, 6-4.
Gulbis’ six aces were canceled out by his double faults, committing six in an effort in which he never really looked settled on serve. He was particularly fragile on second serve, converting just 29% of his second serves into winners.
It has been the second consecutive disappointing result for the Latvian, who has been brought back down to earth after his break through win on tour earlier this year.
Gulbis will continue to playing in Europe as he begins to eye Roland Garros, just over a month away.
