Get to know your forest

If you want to know Estonia, you've got to know about its forests.

TARTU, Estonia — If you want to know Estonia, you’ve got to know about its forests.

Forests more than half of the tiny country’s land area, and have had a major impact on Estonian cuisine and culture for centuries that’s evident in today’s agro-tourism’s mushroom and berry-picking tours, folk songs about the forest heard at the Song Festival to the anti-Soviet resistance that found refuge among the trees.

Both the importance of forests as well as [private_supervisor]the environmental issues it faces are part of the new “Ahhaa, To the Forest with Us” exhibit at the wonderfully-named Ahhaa Science Center in Tartu, itself surrounded by thick forests.

The exhibit opened Saturday and includes games for children, shows and other science educational activities and displays.

Until June 22, people can enter the exhibit’s model forest where Darwin’s famous discoveries are introduced, green energy introduced, different discussions with scientists, skits and other interactive activities all take place.

Kids can construct their own future cars and engines at the workshop. Others can explore the greenhouse effect and find out what the currents are. Those who are into sweets, which is pretty much everyone, can learn how the ingredients for chocolate, marzipan or gummy candies are harvested using trees and plants.

Ahhaa was established in 1997 by the Department of Research and Institutional Development of Tartu University to make science simple and interesting.

The doors are open every day from 10 a.m to 8 p.m.

The adult ticket is 60 krooni (€3.80) and for the students , scholars, and pensioners 45 krooni (€2.90). Family ticket costs 140 krooni (€8.90).
