TALLINN — Following trends from last month Estonia’s jobless rate decreased slightly over the last three weeks for the first time since 2008.
The Estonian Ministry of Social Affairs announced Friday that the country’s unemployment decreased to 14.3 percent, while three weeks ago the result was 14.6 percent. Also the job market situation is not as hopeless anymore, as the Unemployment Fund now has 2,373 available job vacancies, of which 1,891 offers come from Estonia.
Tiiu Vilms, leader of the Estonian Unemployment Fund’s redundancy response team, said confidently at the Estonian Public Radio news program Thursday morning that this year the jobless rate will not increase again this year.
Swedbank reported in its first quarter report Wednesday that Estonia’s economy is expected to grow by 1.5 percent this year and unemployment will decrease in second half of the year.
Despite the positive news, though, to reach Estonia’s pre-crisis employment level, there is still a long way to go.
