Klaipėda port set for record year

During the first four months of the year, a 16.8 percent rise in handling year-on-year was reported by the Klaipėda port authority.

KLAIPĖDA, Lithuania — If Klaipėda port can maintain the increase in cargo handling rates that is has seen thus far, then 2010 will set a new record for handling.

The port has seen handling fall over the last two years in accordance with the decline in the economy. A lot of the handling comes from imports to the country, but also exports from Lithuania’s large manufacturing sector. The prediction that 2010 could be the biggest year on record for the port come off the back of statistics from April, when handling increased 19.5 percent year on year. The huge increase was conditioned by the fact that April 2009 was the largest drop in handling during last year.

The port authority announced that during the first four months of the year, handling year-on-year increased 16.8 percent rise.

“Nearly 10 million [was handled in these four months], which shows 29.5 million tons per year, but knowing that the second half is better, let’s talk about 30 million tons or more. For I would dare to dream, maybe this year will reach the port record, however not everything we wish for can come true,” Klaipėda State Seaport Authority General Director Eugenijus Gentvilas said.

Oil product handling increased by 25 percent in April, business newspaper Verslo Žinios reported. During the month there was an overall 11.7 percent increase in liquid cargo handling, some of which is oil products.
