VILNIUS — Tariffs on natural gas could increase by up to 20 percent if the State Prices and Energy Control Commission approves a decision by Lietuvos Dujos.
Lietuvos Dujos, the country’s gas company is majority foreign owned by German and Russian interests. If increased, citizens would be further burdened by energy import costs, which now make up around one third of the country’s entire imports.
On Thursday, the Lietuvos Dujos board approved an [private_supervisor]increase in gas prices that could take effect as soon as July 1.
The State Prices and Energy Control Commission’s representative Loreta Kimutytė told Verslo Žinios that prices for consumers who use less than 500 cubic meters of gas per year would rise by 15 percent plus a permanent fee of 2 litai (€0.58) per month.
The price, which now sits at 1.87 litai per cubic meter would rise to 2.15 litai if the control commission allows the decision. The control commission must approve rises in price for consumers and industry before the utility can levy the charge.
Commercial gas users annual consumption between 500 and 20,000 cubic meters would see a 20.9 percent increase in has price with their tariff hitting 1.56 litai per cubic meter.
Industry using more than 20,000 cubic meters annually would also see a 20 percent rise to 1.56 litai per cubic meter.
If the prices are approved, it will be yet another blow to the hip pocket for Lithuanian consumers, who have seen their savings disappear and their wages get cut since the crisis began.
