RIGA — Since the beginning of March there has been an inexplicable wave of 31 drownings across Latvia, according to the State Fire and Rescue Service, including 10 over the past week.
The ages have varied from a 12-year-old boy to a 40 year-old man. Authorities are not sure exactly why so many drownings have taken place, as typically this rate is not seen until summer.
Inga Vetere, State Fire and Rescue Service press spokeswoman, said most fatalities have been young men aged 20-35 who were under the influence of alcohol.
