PARIS — Jelena Janković revenged her Dubai loss to Kaia Kanepi on Thursday, defeating Estonia’s top tennis star in the Roland Garros semifinals after their match was delayed by rain last week.
When play did finally get underway, it was Janković who grabbed the early advantage, as Kanepi struggled to settle with a high unforced error rate.
It was surely the high unforced error rate that gave her opponent the first set 6-2. Six double faults also did not help matters.
But as the second set began to unravel, Kanepi’s game began to come back to her as the unforced errors were more regularly replaced with winners. Her sudden turn in form somewhat surprised Janković who struggled with the lift in tempo, falling 3-6 to send the match into a deciding third set.
However, two more double faults by Kanepi proved to be her undoing, as Janković committed only 1 during the entire series and won the third match 6-4.
The loss for Kanepi, ranked 118th worldwide, culminates a disappointing performance at the Paris Open for Baltic tennis players — Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova and Ernests Gulbis, both on a bit of a hot streak beforehand, were ousted in the first round.
