Self-immolation attempt foiled

PAGĖGIAI, Lithuania — On the bridge that connects Russia’s Kaliningrad region and Lithuania, a 49-year-old man from Tauragė unsuccessfully tried to self-immolate.

The man was carrying a small canister of petrol with him before he lit himself on fire. Border guards extinguished the fire, but the [private_supervisor]Lithuanian man has third degree burns and is in a serious condition in hospital.

The incident took place on Sunday night on the bridge near the Kaliningrad exclave’s town of Sovetsk, close to the Lithuanian town of Pagėgiai.

Border guards on the Lithuanian side were informed about a suspicious-looking character who they believed was drunk. Before reaching the Lithuanian side of the bridge, the Tauragė native ignited himself using the fuel from the five liter container he was carrying.

After border guards from both sides of the bridge ran to the man’s aid, they were able to put out the fire. He was conscious after the fire and able to speak.
