LONDON — Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi has caused the first major upset at Wimbledon, ousting 6th seeded Australian Samantha Stosur 6-4, 6-4.
The Estonian has shown stellar form of recent seeing her climb back to 80 in the world rankings, a number which is bound to drop further following Wimbledon.
Kanepi was undaunted by the recent French Open champion, who has to date struggled to make the conversion from clay to grass.
Although Stosur was more accurate on her first serve, she was not as effective as winning the proceeding points, perhaps the telling factor in the game. Getting in 42 of her 66 first serves, only 28 of these were converted to winners. In comparison Kanepi could only get in 38 of her 74 first serves but proved more dangerous when they did go in, converting 33 of them into winners.
Perhaps even more impressive about the Estonian’s performance was the fact that she had to go through qualifying just to reach the main draw, something of a regular occurrence for the Estonian who faced a similar obstacle before making it through to the quarter-finals of the Aegon Classic a fortnight ago.
Given that high seeding of Stosur, Kanepi shall now find the going significantly easier until she reaches the round of 16.
