TALLINN — Unknown fluids appear to have contaminated a small coastal area at Paljassaare Bay in northern Estonia. The source of the slick and its contents have yet to be determined.
An emergency call center received a notification at 5:20 p.m. yesterday that a mysterious substance has been noticed on the surface of the water near the Katariina docks at Paljassaare Bay, on the corner of capital city of Tallinn. Northern Estonian Rescue Service workers were sent on the contaminated site, who placed beams into the water to stop the slick from expanding, and poured absorbents around the contaminated area. The slick was 10 meters from the shore on 50 meter area.
Whether or not there has been testing of the substance remains unclear, as authorities say they have no knowledge of the slick’s content or original source.
Ants Raava, press spokesman of Northern Rescue Center said that it is not known what kind of substance it is, nor where it comes from.
“The substance comes from the bottom of the coast, but as the contamination is so small then it is not worth to send the divers in to search the area,” Raava told Baltic Reports
Raava said that substance is still coming on the surface, but the amount is small and will scatter in time.
