LONDON — Estonian Kaia Kanepi has lost her Wimbledon quarterfinal match, missing out on her first Grand Slam semifinal billing.
While it was Kanepi who had the early advantage it was her Czech opponent Petra Kvitova who prevailed in the end, claiming the match in three set, 4-6, 7-6 (10-8), 8-6.
In the battle of the outsiders, pundits were unsure on which way to lean with both Kanepi and Kvitova collecting considerable scalps on their way to their quarter-final encounter.
In such a tight encounter, it was Kanepi who had more than her fair share of chance, taking Kvitova to break point on 14 occasions. However, only being able to convert on three of them proved to be costly.
Next Monday Kanepi can expect to see an impressive surge in her world ranking, which should see her avoid having to qualify for tournaments for the remainder of the season.
