BARCELONA, Spain — The Baltic states managed to snag another gold medal at this year’s European Athletic Championships in Barcelona with Lithuanian Živilė Balčiūnaitė’s victory in the women’s marathon.
Balčiūnaitė’s 42.195 km run clocked in at 2:31:14, beating the silver-medal winner Nailya Yulamanova of Russia by a full minute.
The medal is Balčiūnaitė’s first gold and the second for the Baltic states in Barcelona after Latvian long jumper Ineta Radēviča’s earned her country’s first for a female in the European Championships. Estonian athletes did not earn any medals in Barcelona, although they lead the Baltic states in all-time medals.
