VILNIUS — Lithuanian General Prosecutor Darius Valys is proposing restructuring the country’s troubled prosecutorial system, saying he has spoken with members of the judiciary about the matter.
Valys wants to combine different arms of the prosecutor based on geography in big cities and populous districts where interconnection would be beneficial.
“The current prosecutor’s office is on the road to structural reform, we also discussed the issue of big cities and district prosecutors being connected — we are looking for the most efficient and cost-effective solution, but in any case it is related to the judiciary in the territory,” Valys told the Lietuvos Rytas newspaper.
There are also plans to combine some courts in the same fashion, Valys indicated.
Any changes to the prosecutorial system will have to be approved by the Seimas.
