TALLINN — The guilty verdict in the Valdeko Sibul trial leaves an unresolved question — who on the Tallinn City Council accepted his bribes?
58-year old Valdeko Sibul was found guilty of bribing a public official on Aug. 16, but the prosecutor’s office remains unable to find out which officials were accepting his bribes. Sibul was convicted of paying 30,000 krooni (€1,917) to [private_supervisor]unknown city officials to ensure the blueprints for several properties in the center of Tallinn would be accepted by the city planning department in June 2006. Sibul avoided jailtime but will have to pay 30,780 krooni (€1,967) in fines plus 6,525 krooni (€417) in court fees.
Tallinn Deputy Mayor Jüri Pihl sent a note to Minister of Interior Marko Pomerants urging him to take action on discovering the identity of the bribe-taker.
“All of city hall feels that those who accepted bribes must take responsibility,” Pihl wrote.
Pihl asked Pomerants whether it is possible to open a new investigation to disclose the people who committed the crime. The interior ministry has not responded publicly on the matter.
