Latvia struggle without Gulbis

DNIPROPETROVSK, Ukraine — In their opening encounter of their Davis Cup Europe/Africa group I matches, Latvia have fallen 4-1 to Ukraine.

Playing without star Ernests Gulbis, who opted to stay in the United States to prepare for this week’s Indian Wells [private_supervisor]tournament, Latvia proved little challenge for Ukraine.

Using just two players, Andis Juska and Deniss Pavlovs, the highlight of the weekend came on Saturday with the Latvians prevailing 7-6(4), 6-3, 6-2 over Sergei Bubka and Sergiy Stakhovsky.

In the singles on Friday and Sunday, the Latvians failed to make any great impression on their opponents, with the only highlight being Juska managing to push Stakhovsky to four sets (2-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-7 (2)) during Sunday’s return singles.

Down in Europe/Africa Group II things were more positive for neighbors Estonia and Lithuania. Both have moved into round two with wins over Hungary (4-1) and Great Britain (3-2) respectively.[/private_supervisor] [private_subscription 1 month]tournament, Latvia proved little challenge for Ukraine.
