Estonians on trial for endangering airplane

TALLINN — Two Estonian citizens were charged with transporting dangerous substances on an airplane by Vantaa District Court Thursday after they were caught with a gas tank and cell phone batteries.

The court is expected to reach a verdict in two weeks. One is accused of transporting a gas tank that belongs to the Estonian chemical company in his suitcase, and the other of bringing [private_supervisor]tens of mobile batteries in his suitcase, each on the same Finnair flight from Hong Kong to Helsinki in November.

The gas tank started leaking during the flight, leaving a pool of gas on the luggage compartment floor, creating a potential fire hazard. Meanwhile the mobile phone batteries created their own separate fire hazard, as the lithium-ion batteries can explode when not properly insulated.

Maria Mroue, press spokeswoman of Finnair told MTV3 news that the situation caused by two Estonian passengers was extremely dangerous.

“There were dangerous and prohibited substances that cannot be transported this way,” said Mroue.

The belongings were discovered at Vantaa Airport before the connecting flight to Tallinn.
Finnish officials and their Hong Kong officials are investigating  the case.

The suspects are facing two years imprisonment if they will be found guilty. [/private_supervisor] [private_subscription 1 month]tens of mobile batteries in his suitcase, each on the same Finnair flight from Hong Kong to Helsinki in November.
