VILNIUS — Renowned Lithuanian architect Elena Nijole Bučiūtė, famous for designing the country’s National Opera and Ballet House, passed away on Friday shortly after her 80th birthday. Bučiūtė had various health problems associated with old age.
An example of how the communist system helped elevate the status of women despite its other repressive features, Bučiūtė graduated from the Lithuanian Institute of Art in 1953 and in 1968 became a [private_supervisor]science candidate, a Soviet knowledge award, for architectural science.
The architect, who designed around 50 major buildings, also taught at the Vilnius Gediminas Technical University.
Among her works of note is the Ministry of Defense building on Totorių street in the capital Vilnius.
