VILNIUS — Lithuania’s national radio and television company LRT will cut back its transmission times starting in May in an effort to save money.
The company has received a budget cut from the government because of the crisis and therefore has to cut back on its transmission time. Usually the gap in budget would be made up by advertising, but since the beginning of the [private_supervisor]crisis, ad revenue has plummeted.
Under the new cuts, radio will only broadcast for 18 hours a day, while TV will be shortened to 9 hours broadcast Monday through Thursday, 10 hours on Friday and 17 hours on weekends.
An LRT spokesman told Baltic Reports that the cuts would save the company up to 1.7 million litai (€493,000) per year in transmission costs.
“Cutting the transmission times down on Lithuanian TV, LTV World, Lithuanian Radio, Lithuanian radio programs Klasika and Opus 3 will save approximately about 15 percent,” LRT spokesman Vytaras Radzevičius said.
Digital TV viewers will not notice any difference in transmission, but analogue viewers will experience a cut in transmission during the day when re-runs are usually shown.
Radio listeners will experience cuts at night.
The exact times for the cuts is not yet known, Radzevičius said, but all schedules will be staggered so that programming runs for as much of the day as possible.
There are no planned cuts to the variety or volume of shows, except that re-runs would be cut because of the transmission costs.
LRT has two TV channels and three radio channels, all of which will experience cuts during their transmission times.
Digital TV will be phased in totally at the start of 2012 when analog transmission ends. [/private_supervisor] [private_subscription 1 month]crisis, ad revenue has plummeted.
