TALLINN — A chicken farmer in northeast Estonia has allegedly starved 8,000 chicken to death and left the corpses lying around the farm, according to local police.
Only 150 chicken survived the farm owner Georg Baskakov’s alleged cruelty, and are now under the care of the municipal government. Estonian Public Television reported Tuesday that Baskakov’s Mäetaguse Bird Farm never notified the municipal government about the mass animal deaths, nor the [private_supervisor]Ida-Viru County Veterinary Center about the presence his farm to avoid regular check-ups. Municipal officials and veterinarians found the dead chickens last week after receiving notification from neighbors, and police have since initiated an investigation.
Helgi Tepper, director of Ida-Viru veterinary center told EPP that Baskakov ignored legal requirements by leaving the dead chicken on the farm.
“He violated the requirements of Infectious Animal Disease Control Act, which says that animal waste must be processed in a certain company, but instead he stored the corpses in a hole on the farm’s territory and some were in the henhouses,” Tepper said.
Baskakov apparently starved a large number of chickens eight years ago, too but received no punishment.
Police are not saying why Baskakov let so many livestock die not which exact charges he may face. He was arrested Tuesday.
