Pirates demand ransom for sailor

VILNIUS — A ransom has been demanded for the Lithuanian sailor that was abducted from his ship, the Argo, off the Cameroonian coast last week.

Pirates attacked the Limarko ship, the Argo, on May 17 and abducted Dmitri Bashkirova, who was in a small motorboat at the time. The main vessel was guided back to port at Cameroon’s biggest city Douala by other crew members.

The value of the ransom has [private_supervisor]not been announced by those close to the case, but an Agence France-Presse story quoted an anonymous source confirming that the pirates had demanded a ransom and that negotiations were ongoing.

Bashkirova is reported to be alive and well by Limarko. He is being held along with two Russian sailors who were kidnapped from the Russian ship North Spirit.

It is believed that they are being held captive somewhere in Nigeria.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis is heading a multi-lateral task force seeking to get the Lithuanian sailor home safely.

It is not the first time when Lithuanian sailors have been abducted. In 2009, five Lithuanians were kidnapped and were later released after a ransom was paid.
