VILNIUS — Darius Valys will officially become Lithuania’s new prosecutor general after the Seimas voted to accept the president’s suggestion to the post.
The vote puts an end to almost four months of speculating who would become the new head of prosecution in the country. In February, the post became free when Algimantas Valantinas resigned from the post amid the Drąsius Kedys scandal. Since then the post has been handled by Raimondas Petrauskas, but he failed to [private_supervisor]impress the president and was overlooked for the permanent, seven-year post.
On June 15, Valys will take the position. He has promised to be impartial in decision making and will look to clean out the prosecution system while reforming its practices.
Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius said he hopes Valys will achieve his main goal — to restore the public’s confidence in the prosecutor general’s office.
“This will not be easy, nor will it be very simple. I’m sure he will have the resolve and the ability to see and discern the systemic problems and solve them. Of course, the ability of the Office will only be seen once he begins. I wish him success in the job,” Kubilius told reporters.
He acknowledged that Valys does not have much experience, “but he may just be a fresh breath of air for the system, which does not transform itself from within, and will give good results,” Kubilius said.
