A slow start again looked as though it would hamper the Latvians as Aleksey Koznev struck in the eighth minute for the home side after taking advantage of an early power play. However, Dinamo Riga showed character when they struck back instantly through a Mike Iggulden special just 18 seconds later. This was followed by a second in the 12th minute when veteran Girts Ankipans scored in just his second appearance of the season.
Dinamo Riga were in dominant form in the second period, shutting Vityaz out of the game. Iggulden his team’s third of the night five minutes into the period, before Armands Berzins added a fourth in the 15th minute.
Halfway through the final period, Vityaz staged a comeback as the visitors began to relax. The home side managed to come within one goal with five minutes left following goals from Gleb Klimenko in the ninth and Alexander Razenshev in the fourteenth minutes. However, the Latvians remained strong, holding the Russians out for the remaining five minutes. They were rewarded for their hard work with a goal to the popular Aleksanders Nizivijs with three seconds left in the game, opening the gap back up to two.
Dinamo Riga will be looking to continue on their winning ways when they travel to Nizhny Novgorod to take on hosts Torpedo on Thursday night. To date, Torpedo have recorded just the one victory, losing 5-3 at home to Dinamo Minsk in their most recent outing.
