Mayor of Daugavpils voted out by city council

DAUGAVPILS, Latvia — Daugavpils’ Mayor Rihards Eigims has been sacked after a majority of city council members voted in favor of his ousting from the position yesterday, the municipal website reported.

Eight opposition city council members submitted a repeat petition demanding that an extraordinary city council meeting be held to consider dismissing former Mayor Eigims.

Eight of the 15 council members voted for his ousting in the closed-doors vote with seven members abstaining. His replacement, who is expected to be city council member Jānis Lāčplēsis, will be elected within three days.

One of the signatories of the petition, Jānis Lāčplēsis, told LETA that the opposition deputies were not satisfied with Eigims’ leadership style and that he was unsuitable for the position.

The council session took place without presence of media representatives as Eigims had ordered municipal police not to let any visitors in Daugavpils city hall for the vote.

Eigims had previously survived a vote of no-confidence on Sept. 1, when eight out of 15 members of the city council voted in favor of his reappointment, while seven deputies supported Lacplesis’ candidacy.
