EU: Lithuania breaching European law

VILNIUS — Lithuania is in hot water with Brussels after the European Parliament found that the country breached EU regulations admonishing its MEP Valdemaras Tomaševskis.

Following a decision taken by the Lithuanian authorities to censure Tomaševskis, Lithuania could be asked to comply with EU law or else face infringement proceedings. The European Parliament has sent an appeal to the European commission to review the case.

Lithuania’s Chief Official Ethics Commission, an independent government body that adjudicates the behavior of public officials admonished Tomaševskis when he alleged discrimination against the country’s vocal Polish minority.

“The decision in question and the legislation of the Republic of Lithuania on which it is based breach European Union law by not observing the principles of the freedom and independence of Members of the European Parliament,” the ruling from the European Parliament found on Tuesday.

The European Parliament wants the the European Commission to appeal to the Seimas before launching infringement proceedings against the country.
