VILNIUS — The Vilnius municipality is demanding an audit of the Sapiega Hospital, alleging 2 million litai (€580,000) are missing and that corrupt personnel policies have crippled the institution’s finances.

The dispute comes as the Vilnius municipal government took authority over at the beginning of the month from the Vilnius regional government and claims to have found this malfeasance and has initiated dismissal proceedings against Sapiega Hospital director Gediminas Rimdeika.

“When we took over the hospital, we [private_supervisor]examined the current situation and found out that the institution was not managed properly. According to preliminary data, the institutional debt is currently around 2 million litai,” said the Vilnius Municipality Social Affairs and Health Department Director Gintaras Žandaravičius.

Rimdeika rebuked the allegations in an interview with Baltic News Service on Thursday, saying the hospitals debt is at “zero balance.”

Rimdeika did admit that in some months over the past year the hospital operated at a loss and had debts to creditors and the Territorial Patient Fund.

The municipality also accused the hospital of having non-employees on the payroll. As it is stated in municipality report, “the suspicious fact that the hospital has 340 approved personnel positions although the hospital provides mainly medical care and has a 90 patient capacity.”

Rimdeika said that the number of personnel at the hospital was determined by the Vilnius regional government, not the hospital management.

Rimdeika also argued that his dismissal “violates the laws relating to the labor code.” [/private_supervisor] [private_subscription 1 month]examined the current situation and found out that the institution was not managed properly.
