Procurement office: Vilniaus Vandenys hiding docs

VILNIUS — The ongoing criminal investigation of Vilniaus Vandenys, the Lithuanian capital city’s water utility, heated up with the country’s Public Procurement Office accusing management of hiding key documents.

Four senior officials from the state-run Vilniaus Vandenys water utility company, including the CEO have been arrested in a bust by anti-corruption police in April as part of an investigation into bribery and the misuse and falsification of documents. The Public Procurement Office published figures in March saying that [private_supervisor]out of 31 inspected transactions made from 2006 to 2008, 26 had major violations in procurement procedures.

Now investigators say as much as 40,000 litai (€11,000) in bribes were accepted by those arrested — company director Darius Norkus, sales and marketing director Nerijus Laurinaitis and welfare and economic services manager Tomas Biknevičius, and one consultant whose name has not been released. All were fired by the municipality the day of their arrest.

In a break from the usual policy of not commenting on current investigations, Public Procurement Office Acting Director Žydrūno Plytniko told the ELTA news agency that Vilniaus Vandenys that the utility had failed to turn in key documents as promised, allowing a submission deadline Wednesday go by.

The company responded via press release saying all requests by investigators had been complied with. It’s unclear if the company management will receive any charges for the missing documents or not.
