Storm causes 4 deaths, regionwide damage

VILNIUS — A strong thunderstorm that areas of the Baltic states in the wee hours of Sunday morning caused extensive damage and claimed the lives of four campers in Lithuania.

At a campsite near the small city of Varėna in southern Lithuania trees blown over by the storm’s high winds landed on tents, killing four Kaunas residents.

Meanwhile power outages were reported in Kaunas and Alytus, affecting 14,000 residents on Sunday and Monday due to power lines being damaged by the storm or falling trees, which also blocked many roads. Meanwhile hundreds of homes had their roofs damaged by the storm.

In Latvia the storm hit the eastern region of the country, with blackouts and blocked roads due to downed trees and power lines in the area around Daugavpils and Madona.

The region around Tartu bore the brunt of the storm in Estonia, with downed trees and power lines causing road closures and blackouts. One farmer lost 400 pigs after the power outage turned off the barn’s ventilation system, causing the swine to die from overheating, ERR reported.
