KAUNAS, Lithuania — More than 24 hours after the last murder was discovered Drąsius Kedys, the main suspect in the killings of a judge and woman yesterday in Kaunas, has been neither spotted nor apprehended by police despite a large-scale search effort in the city.

The police checkpoints on roads leading out of Kaunas have been shut down and the helicopters have been grounded. The Kaunas Police Department announced at 1 p.m. Tuesday that they believed Kedys managed to escape the city. People considered possible targets of Kedys, such as his daughter and her mother are under police protection.

Meanwhile investigators have yet to determine whether Kedys may have acted alone in the alleged murders or worked with accomplices. Witnesses to Monday’s first murder of District Court Judge Jonas Furmanavičius told police they saw more than one perpetrator. There were no witnesses of the second murder of Violeta Naruševičienė, 29 of Kaunas, some hours later.

Anyone who either sees or knows anything about the location of Kedys is asked to either call 112 or visit the nearest police station. Police are advising not to try to apprehend the suspect as he is likely armed. Kedys is 37 years old, 180 to 182 cm tall, has an athletic physique and a cropped haircut.
