Gas pipeline explodes

VILNIUS — A gas pipeline located in a rural area about 50 km northwest of Vilnius exploded Saturday morning. Investigators are still unsure what caused the blast.

A pillar of flame was visible for ten kilometers around the site of the explosion, which is near a village but not immediately adjacent to any residences. No injuries nor structural damage has been reported but five acres of forest was scorched.

The pipeline is owned by Lietuvos Dujos (Lithuanian Gas) and was installed in the 80s. The District Prosecutor’s Office of Širvintos Region, which is investigating the explosion, told Baltic Reports that the cause of the explosion has not been determined. Foul play or a technical error could be possible culprits. Gas was flowing through the pipe at the time.
