TALLINN — Estonia have seen all their teams advance in the Triobet Baltic League following the first night of return-leg first-round matches.
It is something of a coup for Estonia who are often seen as having the weakest of the Baltic football domestic leagues. They will be hoping for similar results from their remaining teams this evening.
In the first game of the day, Flora came up against Šiauliai of Lithuania already tied 1-1 after the first leg. The match turned out to be a dramatic encounter as little could split the two teams over another 90 minutes of football.
Once again they shared a goal each to finish tied at 1-1, forcing the game into over-time. It was Flora who took the initiative at this stage, stepping up the intensity to score two unanswered overtime goals to advance on a 4-2 aggregate.
The second match of the day also took place in Estonia with reigning Meistriiliga champions taking on Taurus, also from Lithuania. Taurus have shown indifferent form at domestic level this season but surprised many when they upset Levadia 1-0 at home on the first leg. However back in front of their familiar surroundings and home fans, Levadia displayed a lot more competency than they had shown on the first leg to easily take the leg 3-0 to advance 3-1 on aggregate.
Jurmala were given little chance when they traveled south to take on Lithuanian team, Ekranas. The odds were against them going into the match with an 1-3 aggregate against them — which they needed to equal just to get back on a level playing field with the Lithuanians.
However, the appearance of television cameras seemed to enlighten the Latvians who took the incentive from the kick-off. They were rewarded for their determination with a second-half goal to hand them an away 1-0 win. It wasn’t enough though and they were ultimately left to rue a poor first-leg performance which ruled them out of having any real chance of going further in the competition.
