Swine flu outbreaks contained in Latvia, Estonia

RIGA — Latvia and Estonia both had limited outbreaks of swine flu on Monday, but authorities do not expect these to become widespread.

The Latvian Infectious Disease Center confirmed that 21 cases of swine flu were registered on Monday, after 52 the previous week bringing the total since June to 110.

However, the Health Ministry’s State Secretary Armands Plorins told the press today that the general public should not be afraid of a larger onset of A/H1N1 cases because thousands of anti-viral medications will arrive in two weeks and the number of cases remains small. Five thousand doses of anti-flu medication have already been distributed.

Swine flu hits Estonia’s justice ministry

In Estonia the Ministry of Justice reported Monday that two of it’s employees have been diagnosed with swine flu. Other employees in immediate contact with these two were examined but found healthy.

“What we’ve done is sent the people who have been in contact with the people to a doctor to see if they’re OK,” Diana Kõmmus, justice ministry spokewoman, told Baltic Reports.

Kõmmus said the two afflicted employees had contracted the virus in Estonia.
