Ventspils trounce VEF Riga

VENTSPILS, Latvia— Ventspils reassured their position as top Latvian team in the BBL, easily defeating VEF Riga 77-53 on Tuesday evening.

Ventspils never looked troubled by VEF Riga, gaining the lead early through some sharp shooting from Janis Strelnieks and Maris Jurevicus. By the end of the first period, Ventspils were already sitting comfy at 30-14.

When they won the second quarter again with ease 18-12 to take a 48-26 half time lead, the game’s outcome was already a foregone conclusion .

Ventspils had their lead cut in the third quarter as VEF Riga played with a little more purpose but it was seemingly all in vain as they still trailed by nine going into the final quarter.

The final quarter was perhaps the most curious in the entire BBL to date with the teams collectively only managing a meager 13 points as Ventspils took the quarter 9-3 on their way to victory.

Jurevicus (25 points) and Strelnieks (15 points) were again the outstanding players for Ventspils. For the visitors Martynas Mažeika was the only player who managed to get out of single figures, finishing with 20.

Ventspils now move into second on the table with a 4-3 record whilst VEF Riga slip off the pace with just one win from four showings.
