Baltic football leagues round-up Aug. 17-25

Meistriliga (Estonia)

FC Flora retained their slim advantage over Trans on the points table with a 3-0 home win over JK Sillamäe Kalev in the first game of the week last Tuesday. They then managed to retain their third place in the standings by holding Flora to a nil-all away draw in their following match on Saturday.

With no one else close to the two teams on the points table, this was perhaps the most intriguing battle in the Meistriliga, with Levadia already 3 points clear at the top of the table from JK Sillamäe Kalev with three games up their sleeve.

Other Saturday results saw Paide Linnameeskond record a 2-0 home victory over Kuressaare, Kalju draw 1-1 with Tulevik and Sillamae Kalev record a 2-1 away victory over bottom of the table Maag Tammeka. Levadia return from a 5-0 thrashing at hands of Turkey’s Galatasaray in UEFA Europa League qualifying earlier in the week to easily defeat the hapless Tallinna Kalev 5-1.

Levadia host Galatasaray in the return-leg this Thursday.

LMT Virsliga (Latvia)

Just three games took place in the Virsliga in the past week, with all eyes focused on Ventspils UEFA Champions League qualifying match. With Ventspils not appearing in the Virsliga this week, Liepaja Metalurgs blew a strong opportunity to move clear at the top of the table, going down 0-1 to Skonto at home on Wednesday.

The other two fixtures during the week featured Jurmala twice, beating Daugava Riga away 3-0 on Thursday before following it up with a 1-0 home win over Olimps on Sunday. The two victories saw the 5th place Jurmala move within 3 points of Dinaburg, who still  have two games in hand.

A-Lyga (Lithuania)

All action in the A-Lyga took place on Sunday with all eight teams featuring in games across the country.

Ekranas and Vetra kept the battle for season honors alive, both recording 2-0 home victories, which leaves Ekranas with a one point advantage at the top of the table. Vetra’s victory was all the more impressive considering it was against previously second placed Suduva, who they have now overtaken in the overall standings.

The gap between the top three and the rest widened with a now 14-point gap separating the leaders from the pack. In other action LKKA Teledema went down 1-0 at home to mid-table Taurus, while Banga came out victorious 4-2 over Kruoja in the highest scoring match of the round.

Great synopsis of events, really great getting some english coverage of these leagues. My great uncle Kenny used to be the Manager for Vetra in the A-Lyga some years ago until he cut off his thumb shucking Mussels some years back – great to see the team is still going well.

Please continue the reports – possibly some photograhy?

    Regards
