JELGAVA, Latvia — Lietuvos Rytas and Žalgiris both suffered losses in their latest Eurocup basketball clashes.
Travelling to France to take on Asvel Basket Friday, Žalgiris would have taken a certain amount of confidence into the game boasting the same one win, four loss record as their opponents. But their misery in Europe continued, with weak second and third quarters ruling out any realistic chances of victory, with Asvel taking it with ease 77-67 .
It was a frustrating evening for the men form Kaunas, in particular Dainius Šalenga who posted 25 points but lacked any real support from his team mates. He was however granted some recognition for his performance, being named the league’s round 6 MVP.
After pushing super-power Unicaja to the brink a week previous, Lietuvos Rytas were expecting to return to their winning ways in Turkey when they took on Efes Pilsen Thursday.
Leading by two (34-32) at the break, Lietuvos Rytas were looking to press home the advantage in the third quarter. However, things went anything but to plan as Efes Pilsen completely wiped their guests of the floor in the second half to take the game with ease 77-62. The win sees Efes Pilsen move ahead of the Lithuanians in the group who now slip back to fourth spot, and need a win this week if they are to advance to the next round.
