The first match of the day, Sevestova’s game was one of the few completed on the outdoor courts before the light showers began at Melbourne Park. Playing against the much more fancied Russian, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Sevestova could not do enough to upset the Russian, falling 2-6, 4-6. Sevestova proved competitive and did in fact make less errors than her opponent but a failure to win points at crucial moments proved her undoing. Her focus will now turn to doubles as she prepares to team up with Russian Maria Kondratieva later this week.

Rain interfering with tennis is typically associated with Wimbledon rather than Melbourne, where extreme temperatures interfering with play considered more of the norm. Sunny weather is predicted for the rest of the week and it is expected that the back-log of games will be dealt with tomorrow.
