Shocker weekend for BBL

BBL_MC_logo_horJELGAVA, Latvia — Surprises, surprises. The latest weekend of the Baltic Basketball League produced some results few would have predicted.

Four games took place over the weekend with the biggest upset coming on Saturday when the league’s no. 2 team Žalgiris fell to Ventspils. The same evening created another upset of sorts with Rock completely destroying Šiauliai. Sunday saw a return to normality with Žalgiris returning to their winning ways and Valmiera triumphing over Kalev/Cramo.

Having qualified for the Euroleague round 16 earlier in the month, Žalgiris were going through one of the best periods in the club’s history, so few were more surprised by the players when they came undone in Ventspils, going down 94-80. Having had contrasting fortunes to their guests of late Ventspils will be hoping this victory is a sign of things to come this season. Ventspils controlled all facets of the game, winning every quarter with ease.

Šiauliai is often overshadowed by Žalgiris and Lietuvos Rytas but they are still deservedly one of the top teams in the BBL. Although some would not have been surprised by Rock’s victory over Šiauliai at home, few would have predicted the fashion in which the victory was achieved as they completely overran their hosts 86-62. Their were few reasons offered for Šiauliai’s poor showing, with the majority of their stars playing.

On Sunday, Žalgiris suggested their performance from the evening previous was nothing more than a bump in the road, as they returned to winning style in fashion, easily accounting for their hosts Liepāja Lauvas 109-68.

Valmiera have proven one of the toughest teams to play at home this season, something Kalev/Cramo can vouch for after their visit to Latvia on Sunday. Valmiera strong first quarter saw them rush out to a quick 25-15 lead and try as they might, it proved a deficit that Kalev/Cramo could not overcome, eventually falling 91-78.

BBL action continues this weekend when Žalgiris host countrymen Nevėžis.
