Žalgiris struggle in final 16

MÁLAGA, Spain — Žalgiris are implanted at the bottom of Euroleague Group H after an 86-68 loss to Unicaja on Wednesday evening.

The latest loss sees Žalgiris go to 0-3 in the second round of Europe’s elite basketball competition. Having been made to pay for playing just three quarters against CSKA Moscow last week, they have effectively been made to pay for the same mistake this week.

Whereas last week it was their final quarter that let them down, this week it was first, outscored 6:21 in the opening quarter, severely putting them on the back foot for the remainder of the day.

By halftime some respectability had been returned to the score, with Žalgiris pulling the difference back to 11, but this still left with everything to do in the second-half.

Unfortunately, they could not pull it back with their main playmakers, Marcus Brown and Dainius Šalenga finding themselves well and truly covered by a relentless Unicaja defense.

With their European campaign now dead in the water, their attentions will move to attempting to toppling Lietuvos Rytas to claim the Lithuanian and Baltic Basketball League titles.
