LONDON — Lithuanian Ričardas Berankis has made it through to the second round in his first-ever junior Grand Slam.

In one of Monday’s lesser known match ups, the former junior world no. 1 has moved past the first round by dispatching of Australian Carsten Ball 6-2, 6-0, 3-6, 7-6.

After looking strong in the opening two sets, the former US Junior Champion looked nervy in the third as his Aussie opponent began to find his stride.

But Berankis was able to resurrect himself in the fourth set to shut it out in a tie-breaker.

If Berankis hopes to be playing long into the tournament he needs to work on his  serve, faulting 53% of the time he stepped up to the line for his first serve.

In the second round he will meet Spaniard Feliciano López, who is seeded 22 for this year’s tournament.

Berankis is not unknown to British fans, having earlier this year been involved in his country’s upset Davis Cup victory over the British.
