Vote on Valinskas to be held today

VILNIUS — Lithuania’s parliament will hold a vote of confidence on embattled Speaker of the Seimas Arūnas Valinskas later today.

Valinskas has rebuffed requests from President Dalia Grybauskaitė and others to offer to resign in light of accusations by a former member of his National Resurrection Party that Valinskas aided gangsters, which Valinskas has denied. His decision to wait for a vote will be put to a test by his fellow Seimas members today.

While the president has come out strongly against Valinskas, the prime minister has not, telling his party members to “vote their conscience.”

A recent Baltijos Tryimai poll shows Valinskas to be the least popular politician in the country with only a 14 percent approval rating.
