Home advantage tells in Baltic football

JELGAVA, Latvia — All three home teams performed admirably on the opening day of the 09/10 Baltic League, even if just one was able to record a win.

First up were Latvian team Dinaburg who were hosting Vėtra from Lithuania for a 0-0 draw. Pundits had expected a Vėtra victory but in the end neither team created enough goal scoring opportunities as the game ended in a dully. If anything it could be said Dinaburg had the upper hand throughout the game but the Vėtra defense was up to the task. Talking to balticleague.com following the match, Dinaburg coach Tamaz Pertia expressed his disappointment in the inability of his team to score at least one goal, stating bluntly, “I am upset we did not score.”

Next up was the televised match of the day. Liepāja Metalurgs traveled to Estonia to take on league newcomers Kalju. It was not the walk in the park for Metalurgs that many had expected. Kalju remained staunch on defense for the majority of the game. It was not until the 76th minute that Deniss Rakels was able to score the visitors only goal resulting in a 1-0 victory for Metalurgs. Kalju will not be disheartened by their performance, keeping in mind just how strong the current Liepāja Metalurgs team is.

In the other game to take place on opening day, Trans Narva travelled from Estonia to Lithuania to take on Sūduva. The hosts proved too strong with two second half goals to Andrius Urbsys in the 50th and Ramunas Radavičius in the 72nd minute sealing the fate of their guests.

Today will see another four games take place. Skonto, who are currently sitting second in the Latvian Virslīga will travel to Estonia to take on Sillamäe Kalev who are currently sitting second in the Meistriliiga. Triobet have Skonto placed as the firm favorite paying 1.50, while the hosts are big outsiders at 5.80. In the second match of the round, Lithuanian team Taurus play hosts to Meistriliiga leaders Levadia. Even though Levadia are yet to lose a domestic game this season, the bookies still only have them placed as slight favorites at 2.35. A-Lyga team Ekranas are strong favorites at 1.65 to beat Latvian hosts Jūrmala whilst in the final game of the round Šiaulai are placed as favorites (2.10) to beat Estonian visitors FC Flora.
