Estonia, Lithuania look to end campaigns on high note

TALLINN — Wednesday evening Estonia and Lithuania will be looking to end their 2010 World Cup qualifying campaigns on high notes, taking on Belgium and Serbia respectively.

Qualification remains on the other side of the moon for both teams, but considering neither was considered a true contender each had mixed campaigns, showing strength in games of which little was expected of them, whilst faltering on games they should have won, or at the least salvaged a point for the draw.

Sitting five points adrift of Belgium, Estonia is destined to finish in the bottom two of group 5, but with just one point currently separating them and bottom-placed Armenia, they will be fighting hard to avoid the embarrassment of finishing the bottom of their group.

Last time Estonia met Belgium was in September last year in the first match of each team’s campaign. On that occasion Belgium victored 3-2 following a tight encounter. Estonia will take heed from Saturday’s performance against Bosnia-Herzegovina and will be confident of finishing their campaign on a winning note.

The challenge is a more difficult for Lithuania as they welcome Serbia to Marijampolė. Serbia are riding high as group leaders and one of the few European teams who have guaranteed their spot at next year’s World Cup. When they met in Serbia in September last year, Serbia claimed a 3-1 victory. Lithuania, however will take heart out of their performance against Austria and attempt to go one step further tomorrow by upsetting the Serbs.
