Latvian cat lady leaves millions to animals

SYDNEY — A Latvian-born dentist who died in Australia left her AU$3.27 million estate (€2.04 million), which includes properties in Fiji, to stray dogs and cats.

Though she never owned a dog or cat, her house was full of books on animals and she always fed them when they came to her dental surgery, Sydney paper The Daily Telegraph reported.

The never-married Daina Silins, also known as The Northern Cat Lady, was found dead in her home after a hungry dog she would feed was seen scratching at the door.

Before her death, the 80-year-old arranged for her estate, which also included around AU$60,000 worth of antique coins and banknotes, to be left for The Cat Protection Society, Animal Welfare League and Domestic Animals Birth Control Society at around AU$1 million each.

It is unknown exactly when she emigrated to Australia, but Silins studied dentistry at Sydney University in 1951 and shortly after set up her own surgery.

The Daily Telegraph reported that her clients at the surgery would miss the tall Latvian who donned a bright red coat and a big hat.
