RIGA — Two more people have died of swine flu in Latvia Tuesday, prompting the Infectology Center of Latvia to declare the virus an epidemic in five regions of the country including the capital Riga.

The latest data on Wednesday from the center confirmed that the Gulbene, Daugavpils, Jelgava, Riga and Rēzekne all had exceeded the threshold limit of 100 infected people per 100,000 inhabitants.

The Rēzekne region is experiencing the country’s worst epidemic with 988 per 100,000 infected with the virus.

The epidemic status of the virus was confirmed to Baltic Reports by the epidemiological monitoring unit of the Ministry of Health.

A 49-year-old Riga man and a 60-year-old Jekabpils woman died of the virus, the center reported.

Including the most recent deaths, the virus has now killed three Latvians.
