Excise, utility taxes increased

TALLINN — The Estonian government approved alcohol, tobacco, fuel and electricity tax hikes Thursday morning in order to increase the state budget income in 2010 and 2011.

The alcohol tax and fuel tax will take effect in Jan. 1 2010, electricity tax in March 1 2010, and tobacco tax on Jan. 1 2011.

The alcohol tax will be raised by 10 percent, divided among the various types of spirits. The price of half liters of vodka containing 40 percent alcohol will rise by 6 percent. Price of half liters beer will raise 2 percent and 0.7 liters of wine will cost 1 percent more.

The price of specially-marked liquid fuel will rise by 8.2 percent and diesel approximately by 2.9 percent. Electricity prices will be higher by 1.6 percent for home consumers, and tobacco tax will be 20 percent.

51 parliament members voted in favor of the increases and 33 against, largely along party lines.
